Situated on the remains of a 1,200 million year old extinct alkaline volcanic crater - one of only three such extensive craters in the world. The Pilanesberg countryside comprises numerous hills and broad open plains and is well stocked with game and bird species - daily sightings of Africa's "Big Five" (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) is nothing out of the ordinary and for those with an interest in bird-watching, over 360 species have been recorded in the Park.
